about

Following the similarly conceptual Cave of Echoes by Ash Glacier, Berlin-based Irish producer Matt Wrafter imagines an alternative cyberutopian future on new EP Machines of Loving Grace.

We regret to inform you that the future has been cancelled.

Is a better world possible? On Machines Of Loving Grace, Loraine James collaborator Wrafter interrogates the utopianism of the 60s and early 70s, when the oncoming advent of computer technology was seen as our way out of the darkness. In this imagined cyberutopia, the difficult tasks of labour, distribution of resources and the management of the climate would all be taken care of by a benevolent technology. Mankind would be able to retreat back to nature.

Of course, in our reality, none of this happened. Cyberspace and modern technology provided no liberation, only further corruption. In the process, we have lost the ability to imagine a better world on the horizon. But what if history had taken a different path?

Machines Of Loving Grace imagines an alternate future, where humans are free from their labours and the world run by sophisticated machinery. But we are invited to ask ourselves: can any technology truly be free of the corruption of the outside world, or is technology doomed to always mirror society and all its faults? The machines here seem benevolent at first, but something more sinister lies beneath the surface. This record is a journey into that murky darkness in a desperate attempt to uncover the truth.
